Australia in line for possible minority government
    Middle East Star
    Monday 6th September, 2010

Australia coild have a minority government after talks on Monday night.

Three independent politicians will decide who forms Australia’s next government when they meet in a group.

They have already held final meetings with the country’s prime minister, Julia Gillard, and the opposition leader, Tony Abbott.

Last month’s elections failed to deliver any party with a majority, although two of the three independent politicians, have already said they are likely to vote as a bloc to avoid a 75-seat tie that would probably trigger another election.

If the independent members agree, the ruling Australian Labor Party, led by Julia Gillard, would have a two-seat majority over conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott.

Gillard already has the support of another independent plus the sole lower chamber legislator from the Greens party.

Labor won 72 seats in the August 21 election, one fewer than Abbott’s coalition.

It could be the country’s first minority government in almost 70 years.
