Pak-Iran gas pipeline project 'not under' international sanctions: FO

Pakistan has said that the gas pipeline project between it and Iran does not come under the sanctions imposed on Tehran because of its nuclear issue with the international community.

"Pakistan is committed to the Pak-Iran gas pipeline and sanctions do not cover this project," The Dawn quoted Foreign Office Spokesman Abdul Basit, as saying.

He said although Pakistan was studying the US legislation about sanctions on Iran, he insisted that the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project was not covered by them.

The spokesman said Pakistan has repeatedly said that the nuclear issue of Iran should be resolved peacefully through negotiations and dialogue with the international community.

Earlier this month, the United States had said that a gas pipeline project, which Pakistan was negotiating with Iran, could violate America's restrictions on major financial deals with Tehran.

On December 27, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari said that his nation would go ahead with the gas pipeline deal with Iran despite US reservations.

The State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland had earlier said the project was a cause of concern for the US as well.

"We've made absolutely clear over many months now our concern about this deal and we will continue to talk to Pakistan about it," Nuland said.

"Were it to go forward, how it might be impacted, again, this is the kind of conversation that we have to have with Pakistan and that we're starting to have now," she added. (ANI)
