Dumped rubbish set alight in the city of Naples
    Middle East Star
    Saturday 17th May, 2008

In Italy, angry residents of the city of Naples have set fire to the piles of uncollected rubbish lying in the streets.

The waste disposal system has been out of action for months and an estimated 5,000 tonnes of rubbish is lying in the streets.

The fire services have tried to respond to multiple alarms but have been unable to respond to some of the most urgent calls.

In some cases firefighters have been assaulted at the scene of fires.

The newly elected prime minister Silvio Berlusconi had promised to improve the situation and has appointed a special official to deal with the waste problem in Naples.

So far he has had no success.

Dumped rubbish set alight in the city of Naples

The most important thing is to preserve the health of the citizens of Naples, it seems that the public health authorities have not done their job. This garbage must have been disposed of immidiately, even if the government had to use its armed forces to clean up this mess, but it should have had priority over all other government business, because the health of its citizens is at stake. It would be very interesting if this garbage was not collected in some Northern city, and how long it would take to clear it up, but since it is in a Southern city, the governing authorities have been passive about this matter, and making at risk the health of the people of Naples. It is a shame that in the 21st Century we still have these embarassing events taking place, and the health of citizens being at stake. I say shame, to those who are responsible for this, and I do believe that they should be held accountable for their abusive actions in a court of law, and if found quilty must pay severely for breaking public health laws, let the axe fall, sparing no one. Sammy, i heard it problem has to do with oraganized Crime

This problem from what i understand has to do with organized crime making money from illegally dumping waste that they get paid to dump.. May i suggest that while people turn a blind eye to crime. Accept bad behaviour! well then this is what happens.. If people truely supported the government and authorities then this garbage mess and organized crime mess can be cleaned up! Italia take pride in your self, choose life and Support the government to clean up the mess. that is what you pay them for.

Yes in Italy, it seems that organized crime controls the garbage,

Anonymous 05-17-08, 06:38 PM Yes, in many parts of Italy organized crime has taken over the garbage industry, it has special contracts from cities to collect and dispose of the garbage, and the poor houseowners pay very high prices to have their garbage removed. The garbage prices are in accordance to the size of a building, it is calculated in the square meters of a building, whether it is occupied or not, each home owner is taxed in according the square meters of his building, whether he disposes garbage or not, he still has to pay the garbage bill according. If there is a house with ten rooms and occupies 200 square meters and it is un-occupied, the owner is held to pay its garbage bill in accordance to the square meters that his building occupies, where in the otherhand 10 people live in one room and dispose of much garbage, those 10 people pay way less than the one that has the empty house and disposes of no garbage. Italy must make reforms in the garbage sector and must impose a garbage collecting fee in accordance on the amount of the garbage that a person, family, or building disposes of. The only fair way is for each family or building to have a garbage container, and must be charged in accordance to the size of its container, rather than the size of its house and the square meters that it occupies, these are abusive laws that favor the organized criminals that are in this lucritive garbage business. Also garbage contracts must not be given to societies that are connected to organized crime, and these contractors must be responsible not to wildcat strikes, and leaving garbage not collected impeading the health of citizens, where in this case of wild strikes the govenment must move in immidiately and clear the garbage if it is necessary it must use the armed forces, and bring the abusers to face justice for breach of contract. I do believe that politics, and corrupted politicians, should stay out of the garbage business, and the health laws must be up-held to the letter. There are a lot of un-fair practices in Italy, especially the collecting agencies that have contracts to collect taxes for the state, who are very severe in their practices, making great profits at the expense of innocent citizens, who might be behind in making their due payments, generally payment notifications are sent with a short time period and people are forced to pay fines for delayed payments, where these collecting agencies prosper.
